Windows 10 upgrade kept failing through windows update on my Gateway Windows 7 desktop. It gave the error code 80240020. I found the answer that worked here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...b-e69946993e78
Apparently the downloaded file was corrupted. Here is a jpg of the answer that worked:

Cannot update Windows 7 without being forced to download Windows 10
location:
7forums.com - date:

I'm holding off on upgrading to Windows 10, and Windows 10 has been intentionally trying to install itself despite that. I cannot shut down my computer without going through the log-off screen to pick "Shut down" without installing updates.
Then a bunch of updates for Windows 7 were released, and I can't install any of them because as soon as I do, Windows Update starts downloading Windows 10 again after I had deleted it.
I had uninstalled KB3035583 yesterday to avoid the install message coming up every time I booted up, but now the GWX tray icon never shows up and it just tries to automatically install via windows update.
What do I do to stop this? I'm absolutely sure as a result of this program behavior that I do not

Windows 10 upgrade: To be or not to be, that is the question!
location:
winsecrets.com - date:
August 13, 2015
I'm not one to jump at the first version of anything. Therefore, I am inclined to stay away from upgrading to Win 10. Currently have WIn 7 Pro on 3 machines. Since I value the opinion of my fellow Windows Secrets users, I am asking to see how many Windows Secrets users have or will upgrade to WIn 10? NOrmally I would ignore it but Win 10 now is free. As soon as I decide to upgrade it will be $100-$150 so I'd like to avoid paying for 3 machines and I would like to avoid getting Win 10 but I will to avaid paying! Your thoughts! Thanks a lot in advance!! Ed Boyd

What Now? Update to Windows 10
location:
winsecrets.com - date:
October 29, 2015
Went to MS download site & d/l the Windows 10 Pro 64 bit ISO. Used the MS utility to burn to dvd.
My Windows 7 Pro is an "Intended for distribution with a new PC." It came with a 25 alphanumeric serial # (or whatever it is called).
I would like to install the Windows 10 described above as a new install - not updating what is on my system but starting with a clean C:\. Can I use that serial number to do this?
Or, must I perform another process(es)?

Windows 10 Pro, version 1511, 10586 update fails multiple times
location:
8forums.com - date:
January 9, 2016
I've tried to install this multiple times: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, version 1511, 10586
Here's what I've done so far to try and fix:
Code:
sfc /scannow
multiple times as admin. No errors reported.
Code:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
I've checked the Windows logs but didn't find anything.
When Windows restarts I get the Windows logo, but it then goes to a blue screen and asks me if I want to restart, or reset my PC. I restart and then I get a message saying the update install failed.

Remove Your Microsoft Account After Installing Windows 10
location:
winsecrets.com - date:
January 27, 2015
Loungers installing the Windows 10 Pro Technical Preview (build 9926) will discover that when setting up Windows, Microsoft requires that you sign in with a Microsoft account. There is no option to sign in with a local account. Once you've signed in with a Microsoft account you can immediately switch to a local account.
Maybe you're like me and you don't want to have a Microsoft account on your computer at all. It's easy to get rid of it and here's how:
1- Sign in with your Microsoft account and go to Control Panel > User Accounts > Manage another account.
By default, new user accounts in Windows 10 do not have Administrator permissions so neither will your local account. You can elevate your local account here.
2- Sign out of you
