windows xp freezes up on startup. will not get past the splash screen. I need to use system restore to restore to a previous state but it turned off and will not turn on in safe mode. I don't have a startup disc available.

Can you manually activate a screen saver like in Windows XP?

In windows XP you can assign a shortcut key to a specific screen saver and activate that screen saver anytime. Is something like this possible in Windows 7? If yes, how is this accomplished?

I have windows XP Spk3. Unable to restore computer.Only to present time.

I click System Restore.
A box comes up with: Unable to restore computer.Restart and try again [ or similar].
I click on Systen Restore again and it opens.
I click Restore your computer to an earlier time.
Only option I have [restore point] is present time.
I cannot restore further back than "todays date".
Suggestions please.

Also my desk top has a folders bar on it that dosen't belong there; and many of the links won't work---"Control Panel" for example.

restore backup files on windows 7 created from windows xp

I want to restore my backup files I'm created from windows xp using windows backup utility to windows 7.
I've tried using the backup and restore centre but it can't recognize the backup files.
What should I do ?
FYI, I'm using windows xp in my office and windows 7 in my home and everyday after I work in my office within work time, I transfer these files from my office's pc to my home's pc to continue my work.

A friend of mine made backup cd-r's from his Windows XP, and now has a Windows 7. He is trying to restore those backup files onto his new computer, which is running Windows 7 now. How can I instruct a person not familiar with computer technology on how
to do this. I would do this for him, if I were closer. He's in Florida and I'm in Pennsylvania. I need to explain in very simple terms to him on how to do this.
