How to find out if the software is activated
location:
8forums.com - date:

I have Windows 8 pro and the Windows 8 Media Center Pack installed. I am a new Windows user. I received a reminder saying "This is a reminder that you must activate your free Windows 8 Media Center Pack product key** by January 31, 2013".
I do not know if this is just a general reminder or it is only send to user who has not activated the software. I want to be sure that my software is activated.
My general question here is "How to find out if the software that I installed is already activated ?" Is there a general place (a file or registry entry) where I can check ?

How do I join a Windows XP computer to a Win7 homegroup?
location:
7forums.com - date:
January 22, 2012
Or how do I just make the XP box know about the Windows 7 box? They're both fed from the same router so should have IP addresses in the same group - but although the Windows 7 PC can see the XP PC, it doesn't work the other way around.
AFAICT the only place (in XP) where I can view other computers is in my XP workgroup. But Windows 7 uses homegroups which don't seem to be quite the same thing. A workgroup seems to have a name but no password whereas a homegroup seems to have a password but no name.
What am I missing here...?

Original title : Help upgrading from XP to Win8
I have been told four times now by different Microsoft Support agents (2 online, 2 by phone) that an upgrade path exists between Windows XP and Windows 8 using the downloadable software upgrade. I am beginning to suspect I was misinformed.
I have a new hard drive, a product key/license for Windows 8 (with no installation media, ONLY the downloadable upgrade), and product key/license/installation media for both Win XP and XP x64.
I have installed XP x64 on the hdd. BOTH the WIndows 8 Upgrade, and the Upgrade Assistant fail to run, returning the error "Platform not supported."
Support has told me I need to run Windows Update to make sure I have the latest Servic

I've already "saved" my frequent favorites that were in the Favorites Bar, but with over 25 sites in my favorite list, I need a similar, compact way to save all these on an internet site on Windows 8.
