DELL INSPIRON 6400
Looking for some help and advice. I have windows 8 installed over existing copy of XP but runs too slow on laptop and need to revert back to windows XP. However, big problems!
problem 1 - wont boot to DVD. Removed hard drive and selected DVD for first boot in bios.
Problem 2 - created a bootable USB and selected USB from bios
Both of the above giving error of no OS. Googling for an answer leads me to the laptop must have a faulty motherboard. So either there is some workaround for this problem or I'm stuck with a mega slow laptop. Any help ideas?
The XP is proper disc and I have tested it on another machine.
There is an option to boot from NIC! Anyone advise on installing from NIC? Something I

I have Windows XP on a Compaq Mini 110 Mini, Model # 110c-1100dx. (My husband has the very same netbook that I am typing from--if I can copy files or anything from this one to the non-working one, etc. if that is one way to fix it, but I don't know how to
do that if I can't start up Windows.)
The blue Stop Error screen says "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these
steps:
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration and check for any updated driv

There were no new programs or hardware installed recently.
There was an error message on the blue screen but no file was mentioned. just an error number something lik x000000007c or something like that. I wish i had written it down but I didn't. Now when I boot, it doesn't go to blue screen; that was the only time
it did. It starts windows normally until the log on screen where if you select a user, it starts to log in, then takes you back to the log on screen. Is there a way for me to see what the error from the blue sc

Windows XP will not boot with a USB drive attached
location:
microsoft.com - date:
April 20, 2011
My Seagate backup drive was replaced under warranty, but the new one, if attached, prevents windows from booting with a hang just before the blue "Windows is starting" screen. The old drive did not do this and the replacement is identical as far as I can
tell. One of my USB pen drives also causes this problem both on my PC and another - but is only rarely present for boot.
How can I fix this? I wonder if an update has caused this - that backup drive was off the system for many weeks while getting the replacement so I have no close time frame for when the system became fussy!
THe BIOS is set to boot only from the usual HDD.
Thanks
Martin

Windows 7 reads a Windows XP drive, then XP won't boot?
location:
7forums.com - date:

I've been using my laptop with Windows 7 with an USB to SATA adapter to read files from an XP hard drive. When I put the drive back in the XP tower, XP will not boot anymore and gives me a 7B error. Does Windows 7 alter the files on the XP drive when it reads it? Just curious if anyone else has encountered this....
