XP VM under Windows 8 shows network cable unplugged
location:
8forums.com - date:
August 22, 2012
I'm not much of a VM expert. I have a couple of win7 systems running a WinXP VM that I installed manually, in all those cases, the virtual network has always just booted up and worked. Under Windows 8 Pro-RTM, I did a XP VM that I loaded myself (versus an XP mode) and it loads the virtual network adapter but it reports that the cable is unplugged
I'm not clear on what this means. Obviously, it's a VM so there is no cable to plug in. I'm guessing I'm suppose to match that Virtual Nic to the regular (aka Host's) NIC but I'm not see any options to do so.
On the same system I run windows 7 Ult and a XP install and the network loads up on boot.
Any guesses here?
Thanks
Dale

Sharing files between a Windows XP PC and a Windows 7 PC over a home network
location:
microsoft.com - date:
December 17, 2009
In order I did:
-Downloaded LLTD Responder, installed, restarted
-Pinged each computer from the other and received error, "Ping request could not find host "computer". Please check the name and try again."
-Turned off password sharing in Win7
-Created a "Share" folder on C: drive on each comp.
-There was no "Simple file sharing" option under folder options.
-Left Homegroup
-Disabled Norton on XP computer
Computer was still not visible in network. Tried entering IP into IE with no success but was able to access it by Running \\OldHP
Currently copying 32 gigabytes (3 hours to go)
I blame Norton.
Thanks.

It seems to be, in part, a firewall issue with me. Stopping the xp firewall and w7 can access the shares. I need to see what aspects are the preventers and thought I'd got it enabling netbios, but no.
Stopping the w7 firewewall does not ley xp see w7, and a user name and password is demanded, that I had not set up
Well done Microsoft, an evening wasted.

Existing Windows 7 - Adding XP on VHD (external?) to make "dual boot".
location:
7forums.com - date:
October 12, 2012
Hi guys,
Here's the scenario.
A while ago I was using Windows XP Pro on my laptop. I was then forced to switch completely to Windows 7, but because I had so many application and configurations done on the XP, I created a VHD from it (using this) before replacing it. Now, I want to know if its possible to set that VHD beside my current OS as dual boot.
I searched and found solutions, but those are either to add a new VHD (Windows 8 mostly) to the dual boot, or loading VHD in virtual machines.
Also, if it is possible, can I copy the VHD on my external HDD and load it every time from there?
The whole idea is because my laptop is not so powerful and it wouldn't handle VMs very well. Because of the same reason, XP Mode is not an option.

Windows 7 wireless workgroup
I have seen this problem many places, but have yet to find an answer that works for me:
I just got a new laptop with Windows 7 installed. I have a desktop with Windows XP, and I wish to network the 2 computers using a workgroup. Both computers connect to the internet/LAN via a DSL modem/router. Both have a flawless internet connection. Networking
between the 2 is not flawless: it is heavily dependent on whether my laptop is using the wireless LAN or is connected to the router with an ethernet cable.
Wired (Ethernet)
Everything seems to work when the laptop is wired to the router. I have successfully transferred files from the XP box to the laptop. I don't have enough workspace in my offic

Need to connect to home wireless network - Windows XP Pro - error with network password - needs to be 40bits or 104 bits..

I have a new laptop at home that has windows xp sp 2 installed. I am trying to connect to my wireless network.
I keep getting the following error;
The network password needs to be 40bits or 104bits depending on your network configuration. This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 26 hexadecimal characters.
I gave my dad a new laptop this fall and he gave me this one that his friend had given him... I have never worked with XP Pro...
We have several other laptops on this wireless account at home.
