BSOD from Windows Update becomes "Unknown Error"
location:
7forums.com - date:
December 24, 2012
So far, I have little more than an operating system with no actual software installed. I have wanted to do some updates to my installation, but on several occasions, I have been stopped by a BSOD. Sometimes it is not on the screen long enough to construe the error. Also, I have been shown the location of the error logs that purportedly cause BSOD, but me, with admin privelages, have not enough permissions to see them.
My hardware is indicated in considerable detail under my user profile (click on my username and follow the links to "system spec").
Recently, these BSODs have disappeared to be replaced with: Unknown error: Code 800B0100 Unknown error: Code 80073172 Unknown error: Code 8007065E Paul King

Windows Update never completes, no error given
location:
8forums.com - date:

Hello,
I've got a Dell xps computer that was originally running Win 7 64 bit, and then the harddrive failed, I imaged it to a new harddrive, which turned out to be an Advanced Format drive, and then I upgraded to Win 8 because I had some problems which I had attributed to corrupted Windows components from when the original drive failed. (There were indeed some cross-linked files which were system dlls that were picked up by chkdsk.)
The upgrade went smoothly, and most everything works perfectly, except for two things: Windows Updates, which simply never completes, and MSSQL Express which fails with an error log message "sector size 4096 and is now on a volume with sector size 3072" blah blah blah.
Has anybody got any s

Error code 8024402C Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

Error code 8024402C Windows Update encountered an unknown error.
On a new 64 bit system using Windows 7 Home Premium, I now get the above error. When the system was first setup, updates were retrieved without any problems.
Zinstall was used to transfer files and settings from a 32 bit Windows 7 Pro system. After the transfer, Windows Update generates the above error message. Only the Windows Firewall was installed.
It appears this is a false message. Since the message appeared, a Windows 7 update has downloaded and been installed, on shutdown. Could this be some conflict between 32 bit and 64 bit?
I went to this Microsoft Fix-It site:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/en-gb. I downloaded and ran MicrosoftFixit.wu.LB.8026234320051

Windows Update is not working/Update Readiness Tool won't install
location:
7forums.com - date:
December 21, 2012
Win 7 64 Windows Update not working (post migration), nor is Windows Update Readiness tool installing. I have renamed catroot and stopped services, nothing working. I just migrated HD to a hybrid solid state (Seagate Momentus). I had this problem both with Acronis 2009 and Acronis 2013, and Windows Backup would not create a recoverable partition (always said file not available about 30% through the recovery). I have installed the Intel IDE ATA drivers, and scoured the help topics. I have tried everything. I could really use some help.
The error I receive when attempting to install the Windows Update Readiness Tool is:
"Installer encountered an error: 0xc8000247"
The Microsoft FixIt and Control Panel FixIt says it has fi

location:

Hello
I am having trouble installing Windows 7 Service Pack 1 using Windows Update. I really want it so that I can get IE10 on my machine.
I tried the following:
1. Running System Update Readiness Tool
2. Running Windows Update diagnostic tool
3. Running Fix WU utility
4. Disabling Windows Firewall
5. Disabling Microsoft Forefront Client Security User Interface
6. Running CCCleaner and cleaning up the registry
7. Renaming C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.old. Renaming C:\Windows\system32\catroot2 to C:\Windows\system32\catroot2.old
but nothing seems to work .

Windows update service won't stay disabled
location:
7forums.com - date:
February 19, 2014
I've turned off windows updates (don't download and don't install), and stopped and disabled the service, but it keeps installing some updates. When I look at windows services later, instead of the "Disabled" I set it to, it says "Automatic (delayed start)". How can I disable it for sure?

Windows update broken w/error 8024402F
location:
microsoft.com - date:
October 26, 2013
Hello,
Seems like I'm definitely not alone in this problem:
When running Windows Update from my freshly installed Win 8 laptop, the process fails almost immediately with:
--
Error(s) found:
Code 8024402F
Windows Update ran into a problem
--
I have:
1. Cleared out the SoftwareDistribution folder and let it rebuild.
2. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter tool. When it runs it finds problems, and specifically says
Problems installing recent updates - not fixed." I reboot and have the same issue.
3. Run sfc/scannow - everything checks out fine.
I'm at a loss. Anybody have other tips/tricks to try?
Thanks,
Brian
