I can't get the Windows update service to start, so I can't do any updates. This is on Windows 7 with SP1.

I'm not getting any error codes, just a popup box that says that Windows update service is not running and needs to be started and that the machine may need to be restarted. I've restarted it (several times) but still no luck. I tried the FixIt and still
no luck.

Windows update will not work properly

Hi all,
I just posted in another thread the same problem but it was a little old so I decided to start this thread anyway.
So, my problem is this.
"Windows Update cannot check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."
Background information.
I have a netbook which has a partition for recovering the computer to factory settings. I was having lag issues. I thought it may be to do with my hdd as it was in a car accident and didn't sound amazing. I have had no real big issues with it yet though. I also thought I would try a factory reset to see if that may have been the problem. I replace the hdd no worries (i cloned it) but that was not the problem (as may be obvious to som

Windows Update will not run after installing Quickbooks Enterprise R12
location:
microsoft.com - date:
February 19, 2013
Running Windows XP Professional with SP3. On 2 different computers (both with same OS) and a Windows 2003 Server after installing an upgrade to Quickbooks Enterprise R12 I can no longer run Windows Update from these machines. I had just used Windows
Update on each machine and know that it had worked. We do not use an update server. The Windows error is: Error number: 0x8024402F I did notice that as part of the Quickbooks update .NET 4.0 is installed. I have spoken to Quickbooks and they claim no
responsability even though it worked before and now no longer works.

I have read lots of threads by people with the same problems, and sadly I need the same sort of fix. I have run the fix-it tool and the System Readiness fix to no avail. Examining the files listed in the checksur.log reveals they are empty, with binary zeros.
I have attached my checksur.log file for your viewing pleasure.
Many thanks in advance for any help rendered.

XP SP3 - Windows update will not work.
location:
microsoft.com - date:
November 27, 2012
I am running XP SP3. When I tried to download updates this morning I got an error message 80070424. After trying the fixes listed by Microsoft, I was able to download the updates. When I try to install them I get error message 80072F8F. My time is correct;
I even checked in the bios. A lot of the fixes applied to Vista. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
When I try to run the automated fix program to troubleshoot the problem, I get the error message again.
I turned the firewall off in McAfee. When I try to confirm with in Security in the Control Panel, I get an unspecified error message.

Windows Error Code 8024402F Windows Update encountered an unknown error, after installing .Net framework 4 Client profile
location:
microsoft.com - date:
November 29, 2012
Several installations on various computers and laptops, of Windows XP pro, and Windows 7, various versions.
Every time I install the above update via Windows update or the web installer, I get the above error when searching for Windows updates.
Removal of the update from add/remove programs/Programs and Features lets WU search properly, but after installing it again the problem reoccurs.
No obvious correlation between any of the installs.
Had limited success with running the .NET removal tools I found, and installing the Full .NET4 installer, but not on every machine.
Until I can resolve this, I'm going to hide the update on any computer I have to update.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
