Windows Phone 8.1 includes notification center and Siri-like personal assistant
Microsoft is preparing to ship its Windows Phone 8.1 update with two significant changes: a notification center and a Siri-like personal assistant. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans have revealed to The Verge that the company is currently beta testing copies of Windows Phone 8.1 internally, with plans to fully detail its features at the Build Developer Conference in April, 2014. A highly requested notification-center feature will be added to the software, and we’re told it’s enabled by swiping down from the top of the screen in a similar way to iOS and Android.

A friend recently lost his DSL modem to old age. The phone company tech support lady determined that it needed a replacement, and overnighted a new one. His was about 10 years old, a Zyxel 660 (like mine), and the new model is a modem/router/Wireless combo. He plugged it in, but still couldn't connect (his home network is all wireless using a Netgear router), and called me for assistance.
When I got to his house I took out my phone just to see if the new modem was broadcasting a wireless signal. It was, and the phone gave me the "Connect?" dialog box. I accepted, and the new modem's setup html page opened. I ran through the procedure on my phone, entered the modem's passphrase (printed on the bottom in hex), and got an inte

This new version is nothing but amazing. I have been using it for a couple hours and it's just great. Peter Bright has a thorough review:

There are many new features that make it worth using this preview: the notifications center, the new wider start screen and for US based users, Cortana.

Windows Phone 8.1 Official (AT&T) Update.

I just finished a 5-minute, 2-reboot pre-update update to prepare my Nokia Lumia 1520 for Windows Phone 8.1. It's currently downloading the 8.1 update (which appears to be fairly large, but I'm on my home WiFi, so size doesn't really matter).
I'll keep you posted.
>>> edit <<< my download was at 88% and then a small thunderstorm caused a power blip - lost my DSL momentarily, so I had to start over. I'm back to 66% and counting.
