Windows 8 doesn't shutdown properly; a lot of app settings gone

I've been having this issue for quite a while: if for some reason Windows doesn't shutdown properly (whatever crash: app, power, driver, etc), at the next boot a loot of app settings are gone.
For example Skype settings, IE cookies, et-cetera.
Is this a common issue or am I the only one experiencing it?

Windows didn't shutdown properly
location:

I seem to be getting this message and the prompt to boot into safe mode everytime I startup or reboot. Everything seems to be shutting down normally. This wouldn't be a big deal except for the fact that it seems to be loading an old system restore point whenever it does this. I don't know for sure if these 2 issues are connected. I first started getting the "Windows didn't shutdown properly" prompt after I had to do a reset of my computer during a total lock. I can't say for sure if the system restore point issue began when I first saw this as I don't shutdown my computer very often. Thanks for your help!

Hi to all,
My Dell X8500 Windows 8 Pro 64bit computer will not shut down or Restart without a forced shutdown. I just get a Restarting blue screen and the circle of dots indicating it is trying to shut down, but nothing happens. I have left it for a half hour or more but still it will not shut down.
I went out on the internet and posters have suggested everything from turning off “Turn on fast startup (recommended)” to running “bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes” at the command prompt. Nothing has worked.
It was also suggested to run “PowerCFG.exe /energy” and It notified me of – 21 Errors, 3 Warnings & 23 Informational problems and told me to see C:\windows\system32\energy-report.html for more details but I can’t f

windows 8 , shutdown prompt ... disable ?
location:
8forums.com - date:

hello,
im wanting to disable a shutdown prompt that appears with windows 8.
ive installed a 'soluto' equivalent to a start menu, using their website and software, tweaks etc.
for some reason I now get a prompt when I click on the 'shutdown' button in the start-menu on the desktop.
is their a way of disabling this ?
many thanks
stuart
ps... I have checked with soluto, they have been no help.
... the prompt reminds me of an old 98,xp feature, where a drop down arrow appears, and asks wether you want to shutdown, restart, sleep etc etc ...
