I was trying to download updates for some apps I have on my laptop using win. 8, and each time I try it tells me that Windows firewall is preventing them to download and that I should turn that on. So I go to settings, find the win. firewall and try and turn it on and it gives me this error code: 0x80070422. It also keeps saying that it needs to use recommended settings and that it can't change settings, and everything related to windows defender is like that, so I'm stuck in a loop and I have no clue where to go from here. Help? I'm also not quite sure this is the right topic this should be under but oh well, I don't know what else it would fit under since this is windows defender and that's a security thing.

Windwos 8 Password issue and Windows defender not working

Original Title:  PASSWORD ISSUE   Because I was prompted  to open Microsoft acct on my new Sony Laptop, I now have to sign on with the Microsoft account which requires my Hotmail password.  I prefer having a separate password to access Hotmail. Having my email exposed simply because I have logged on to the computer is not desired. (Actually I was happier using my initial Administrator password at logon)   Also, I cannot turn Windows Defender on. Is it not compatible with other Internet Security services? I have tried to follow the steps to activate and I cannot even get to the  Windows Defender  ON/OFF  option.   Frustrated...

Hello, I selected Windows Defender in Control Panel. Got a message saying it's turned off. If you are using another program, check the status in action center. I am using Microsoft Security Essentials. Is that the reason Windows Defender won't turn on? I like MSE so it's not critical that I use WD. I'm just curious. Do they conflict with each other? Hi Every one! I have "Windows 8 Release Preview(32 bit)" installed on my PC. But the problem is that the "Windows Defender" is not appearing in "Notification Area". I want to put "Windows Defender" into "Notification Area" just like "Microsoft Security Essentials" in Windows7. My previous OS was "Windows7 Ultimate". Please Help!!!

Hello i just purchased a desktop with windows 8 i keep getting a solve Pc issues pop up in task bar saying windows defender is off and my nortons is off, but when i check nortons everything is running fine and it says i am secure , but i am unable too turn windows defender on or nortons firewall via the action center , has nortons diabled my defender an just causing a conflict or should i not worry and just deal with the pop up via the action center

Dear Sir,   My windows defender in windows 8 is not working and not turning on.I read through several links and answers in this community and other communities but nothing worked.I refreshed my Dell N5521 laptop but still problem remains same. When I go to control panel and try to click the defender icon, it says, ' defender is turned off and its not monitoring my pc'. and also asks me to check the status of other apps in action center but I don't see any change there.all are on and ok, except network access protection turned off and not able to turn it on. also my windows is not updating and says error and failed to install. Windows Defender not updating malware definitions

Hi there, Windows Defender won't update its anti malware definitions... as of now they are a few days old. Manually pressing the "update" button won't do a thing. Also, when trying to update from the cmd prompt, I am told that no update is needed since everything is up-to-date. Also see the attached screenshot. Does anybody know what's going on?
