How do I make my Skype for Windows 8 show notifications of incoming calls when I'm on my desktop?
location:
microsoft.com - date:
April 1, 2013
I get signed in on the Skype for Windows 8 and then go back to my desktop. But whenever my husband, who is deployed, tries to call me I don't know that he is until he messages me on facebook. Then I toggle over to Skype and it shows that I've had 4 missed
calls from him even though I'm signed into my account. How do I set it up to receive notifications from Skype when I am using a different app?
Thanks for the help!

Accessing Windows 8 media center streaming from XP
location:
8forums.com - date:
March 24, 2013
I have an older laptop running XP Professional and have upgraded my other desktop systems to Windows 8 w/ Media Center. The laptop works fine as is but I can't seem to find any applications that let me play a media stream off the Media Center server. I have XP Media Player 11 and it looks similar to the Windows 8 version just don't see the "Other Libraries" item on the left side bar.
So are there any applications for XP that can access the Windows 8 Media Center streaming? My DirecTV set top boxes can access the streaming, but they are so limited in what formats and sizes they can handle, as to be almost useless. The 2 Windows 8 machines can stream off of each other, so I think I have the streaming all set up properl

Windows 8 - How to open PDF docs and Start Menu application choices in the current working desktop?
location:
microsoft.com - date:
November 18, 2012
I recently upgraded to Windows 8 Professional.
One issue that I'm having, is that whenever I try to open a PDF document, it always opens in a new, dedicated window, with a totally black background.
Is there a way to open PDF documents on the desktop, so that I can see the PDF content, on the same page as all of my other open applications?
Under older versions of Windows, I can go to the start menu, then select all applications, and they're listed in the same desktop screen as all of my other already opened applications.
In Windows 8 Professional, I haven't found a way to duplicate that behavior yet!
It keeps taking me to a completely different screen. One that looks like it might have been

Windows 8 - File Explorer hanging and desktop icon being shown as "white color" icons
location:
microsoft.com - date:
November 23, 2012
Not sure if others have faced this issue, I have upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8 and done a clean install.
When I start the file explorer, it just shows the moving "green" color bar and nothing happens. Just seems to be doing nothing. On other instances if it does open the selected folder correctly, when you "right-click" on the file name, the "right-click"
pop-up menu does not appear and it just hangs.
I have also seen that randomly, all the file associations are lost. Like for example, all avi video files are no more showing their expected red color icon, ininstead all the files under the file explorer are shown as "white" color icons. The same also
happens when you open the desktop.
