Poor font rendering in Windows 8 (blurry text)

Apparently there is a huge problem with font rendering in Windows 8. Text appears very blurry. Programs affected by the new rendering are: Internet Explorer 10, the modern interface (start screen), Office 2013 and other 3rd party applications
that rely on this rendering technology. There is no way to fix this problem, unless Microsoft recognizes it.

Basically this computer recently crashed (HP Pavilion Elite HPE 372f) - I had an incredibly rough time trying to recover it so eventually I just took apart the PC, ripped all the essential files off of the hard drive, put it back together and did a 'clean'
install of Windows 7 64 bit (I had a CD lying around, the PC itself didn't come with a recovery CD or a Windows 7 CD).

Create a bootable USB of Windows 8 (pre-installed on my Samsung Series 7), to swap HDD for SSD and re-install.

I would prefer to do a clean install rather than just create an ISO. To my mind this should be a pretty simple. standard procedure, but the more I research the more confused I am about it. I really wish Windows would stop doing things to make my life
more difficult.
