ok, i just built my brother a new comp.
AMD Phenom II X4 965
G-Skill 4x2gb 1600MHz DDR3 (but the board sees it as 1333MHz, need to manually clock but too lazy)
300 GB laptop hdd (salvaged out of broken laptop and mounted with a special thingy)
EVGA GTX260 core 216
MSI 980a motherboard
I just installed Windows 7 64 bit on it and came across a problem. windows is seeing 8gb but only 2gb is usable. After a bios update, windows now notices 3.3gb usable and 8gb installed. I've tried going into msconfig and checked the max mem and unchecked... no difference. Ive also disable the onboard vga through the bios completely so i know no ram is being dedicated to that. I really don't know what the problem is. I have the same set up but different

Registry fix for creating a Windows 7 profile using the XP method
location:
7forums.com - date:
January 26, 2012
I've spent months using sysprep trying to create a default profile customised just the way I need it, alas I've come to realise it's simply not possible with the tools Microsoft have provided. In the end I had to resort to using the XP method of just copying the profile across which was fine at first, but then the problems started, namely because of this one registry location; Code:

Sony HDR-FX1 video camera is not recognized in Windows 7 (using 1394 legacy driver)
location:
microsoft.com - date:
May 31, 2010
I spent the entire day yesterday surfing the Web for a solution. Sony's website claims the HDR-FX1 ( a $3k High Definition Video camera) should work with the drivers included in Windows 7. I have Windows 7 Professional. There is no response from the
system when I connect the FX1 to a Firewire port and the video software (Sony Vegas 9) can't see the device. Also, the camera does not show up in the Device Manager.
I am not a novice user. Also, I have two FX1s and neither works under Windows 7. Both worked under Windows XP with Sony Vegas 9.
I read Microsoft's white paper on the switch to IEEE1394b. That paper implies, but does not state absolutely, that the 'legacy' IEEE1394 driver

When Installing Windows 7 Pro Using a USB Device?
location:
7forums.com - date:
January 25, 2012
I have Windows 7 Pro located on a thumbdrive and I want to make sure I am using it correctly.
First, I set the USB device to boot from the BIOS settings and then the prompts come up for me to begin a install. After going through everything and installing, it restarts automatically and as soon as it restarts it boots to the USB device again and starts over for me to go through the prompts again to install. So I change from the boot device being USB to HD and everything seems to finish fine.
My question is, is this correct? This is the first time i have used a thumbdrive to install an OS and it seemed to go so fast. Within probably 10 minutes the install was complete and restarted. How do you guys install from a USB device?

Can't link 2 Windows 7 PCs using same Workgroup
location:
7forums.com - date:
May 17, 2012
I have a 32 bit desktop and a 64 bit laptop. Both machines are set to the same workgroup (HOME) and both use the exact same “user name” and password to log on. (My router doesn’t handle IPv6 so I can’t use the Homegroup method to link). Both “computer names” show up on both PCs when looking at Networks. I can access the desktop from the laptop by just clicking on the “computer name” but when I do so on the desktop I get a screen that wants a “user name” and password. It rejects the entry that I know to be correct and is common to both computers. I’ve looked at several posts discussing similar problems but have yet to find a solution. I even made sure that the clocks on both computers have the same date and time which surprisingly was the s
