Creating Windows 7 install media on flash drive using diskpart or 'What has it got in it's pocketisesses?'
location:
microsoft.com - date:
August 11, 2009
If you want a flash drive to be bootable, you have to use a utility like diskpart to do that. Then copying an install DVD to it will make it act as bootable install media for Windows.
A. Make a bootable flash drive by opening a Command Prompt, 'Run as Administrator', to run these commands:
diskpart
select disk 2 ('list disk' to determine number)
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=fat32
assign
exit
B. Copy DVD to the Flash Drive
xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\

Windows 7 Install - Do I Wipe Hard Drive First?
location:
7forums.com - date:
May 21, 2012
Hello,
I have a desktop computer that currently has a Pentium 4 CPU, 2 Gigs of Ram and Windows XP.
I want to install Windows 7 OEM on this machine. Do I need to wipe the hard drive first?
Also, I am thinking of just replacing the hard drive anyway....can I replace the hard drive and then install Windows 7? Do I need to worry about any drivers for the mother board, sound card, video card, etc. before I scrub or replace the hard drive?
Thanks for the assist!
Cheers,
Dave

Will Windows 7 install CD be able to find and fix PARTITION problems....automatically?
My Windows 7 computer does not boot up to Desktop.
I am thinking that I can use a Windows 7 install CD to fix this.
But, I wonder if install CD can find my PRESENT PARTITION SETTINGS...in order to re-install my settings/files?
I want to be able to save my settings/files.
Or, am I just taking a chance, the upgrade will work?

USB hard drive a bootable Windows 7 install disk
location:
7forums.com - date:
November 13, 2008
This article refers to the Hard Drives issued at PDC, but it also applies to using ANY USB hard drive as a bootable disk.
Tip: make your PDC 2008 USB hard drive a bootable Windows 7 install disk
If you’re one of eight thousand people lucky enough to attend PDC 2008 last week and receive the ultra-cool 160GB portable hard drive with “the goods” then I have some extra good news for you, your hard drive can also become a bootable Windows 7 install disk. The best part is that you don’t even have to delete any of the existing files on the drive since there’s about 90GB free of the 160GB drive.
This is especially handy if you’re trying to install Windows 7 on a device without a DVD drive or if you don

Why did Windows 7 install system files on my secondary internal hard drive, which prevents it from being formatted or seen as a Windows Backup location?
location:
microsoft.com - date:
August 23, 2012
My computer has a Seagate 500 GB SATA internal hard drive which has the operating system on it, and also a secondary 80 GB internal Seagate IDE hard drive which I've been dragging files onto as a backup. I wanted to format this 80 GB drive to get a fresh
start and use Windows Backup to backup my files. Windows 7 will not format the drive, and it does not see the drive as a backup location because apparently during the clean install of the operating system, Windows put system files onto this secondary drive.
Disk Management reports the operating system drive (the 500 GB one) as "Disk 1-Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition. It reports the secondary drive (the 80 GB one I would like to use with Windows Backup) as "Disk

Aborted Windows 7 Install created small unusable partition
location:
microsoft.com - date:
January 12, 2013
Building my PC I installed an SSD for the OS and 1Tb 7200rpm drive for D: but after initiating Windows 7 Ultimate install disk I aborted the install which created an approximate 100Mb Reserved Partition which I was unable to reformat on the second go around.
Not thinking it would be a problem I continued installation successfully, but that small partition has grown to concern me. My system now freezes, and twice has given me a Blue Screen Crash. After the PC stops working I try doing a Hard Boot, but the screen
is black and states there is no Bootable Drive. I suspect the small partition is creating this No Boot Drive Error. I need to know if there is a way I can repair the SSD by Mounting this partition or ReInstallin

Is there a Windows 7 Install from USB flash drive size limit?
location:
microsoft.com - date:
April 13, 2013
I have a copy of Windows 7 Professional on disc (32 and 64 bit). I want to create an install on a USB memory stick in case the discs get scratched.
However, I am concerned that if I buy a large flash drive (64gb) then it will not
1) be recognised, because it is too large in capacity or
2) I will be unable to use any capacity beyond the .iso file for other storage
Any help is much appreciated. I have not yet bought the 64gb flash drive, but obviously the bigger I buy gets me more gb per £
3) If I need to buy a smaller USB flash drive, what is the minimum size I would need?
