How do I stop Windows Update from restarting my computer in Windows 7 Home Premium?
location:
microsoft.com - date:
November 4, 2009
While I do not mind Windows Update automatically updating my PC, hacing it force a reboot when I am logged in is causing a problem. I currently have WU set to perform the updates at 3am, and when it finished, if there needs to be a reboot, I am not there
to tell it to wait. I would prefer to leave the time settings as they are, and simply disable the automatic reboot, instead opting for WU to let me know it needs to reboot the PC. I found ways of doing this in XP and Vista, including registry edits and group
policy modifications. However, The registry is obviously slightly different so the keys do not exist compared to what I found, and since I am running Home Premium I do not have gpedit.

Java update problem - Windows 7 64-bit
location:
7forums.com - date:
April 1, 2010
Hi,
First time poster here, I hope my question is in the correct forum. Windows 7 64 bit.
I am trying to update to the latest version of Java. When I go into Control Panel > Java it says Java 6 update 14.
When I try to update it it downloads the update then it uninstalls Java and reinstalls the Java 6 update 14 version.
When i look in Control Panel > Programs and Features there are 2 Javas in there, one says,
Java 6 update 14 (64-bit) installed on 15/8/2009
the other says,
Java 6 update 17 installed on 30/3/2010 (although I think the current version is now update 19)
(I don't have any trouble updating Jave on my XP laptop)
Regards, Chris.

How do I tell if I have Java 32 bit or 64 bit installed in Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit?
location:
microsoft.com - date:
June 17, 2010
Due to a problem with Java updates I had to uninstall the said program. I downloaded what I thought was a 64 bit version from their site, but now in the control panel beside the Java emblem it reads (32-bit) How do I tell if I mistakenly downloaded
the 32 bit version or the 64 bit one? I have both the 32 and 64 bit versions of IE on my machine, but have both program versions toggled off so they won't boot. I use Google Chrome as my browser and Hotmail for e-mail. (Looking at the files they all seem correct
to me as both 32 and 64 bit) Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Peace!

How to find java runtime in dos on Windows 7
location:

I have been unsuccessful in finding the right DOS commands to achieve this and would appreciate some help.
This is an extract from my registry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment\1.6]
"JavaHome"="G:\\Program Files (x86)\\Java\\jre6"
Not sure why it is showing the double backslash...
I've tried various commands (in BATch files), such as the following, without success:
- - - -
@echo off
set KeyName=SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment\1.6
REM set KeyName=HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment
set Cmd=reg query "%KeyName%" /s
for /f "tokens=2*" %%i in ('%Cmd% ^| find "JavaHome"') do set JAVA_HOME=%%j

How to stop Windows 7 from writing desktop.ini files everywhere?
location:
7forums.com - date:
September 13, 2010
Hello,
so I have issues about hidden files (I always want to see them), and I'm particularly annoyed by this desktop.ini file. As if it wasn't enough that there is one in almost every folder, in Windows 7 there are TWO of them on my desktop!
Also, Windows 7 is always trying to burn/write that file on every removable media I have, including USB memory sticks, external hard drives, CD's, DVD's (and the fact that they aren't rewritable and have been burned and closed by the factory doesn't seem to stop it from getting that file ready to be written to disc), etc. Am I the only one thinking this is insane?
My question is simple - how do I stop Windows 7 from ever creating another one of these files again (that is, until next reinstall or s

How long is normal for a Windows 7 update?
location:
7forums.com - date:
April 13, 2011
Hi,
my PC's been installing a windows update for more than two hours by now. There were 19 updates to install, 1-15 went well, but Nr. 16 is taking an eternity. How do I know that it's actually doing something and not just stuck? What happens, if I force quit the system from the power off button?
I'm using Windows 7 home premium 32bit on a Lenovo G555, about 6 months old. It has 4GB ram and a 2,something dual core processor, but I can't remember the exact specs.
Thanks in advance!
