Unsolicited disk activity
location:
winsecrets.com - date:

One of my hard drives is having very heavy activity. According to Control Panel's resource monitor, most of the reads are in Msmpeng.esc which is evidently the Microsoft Security Essentials app. It was set to run at 2 AM today, but I just turned on the computer at 8 PM. There is heavy write activity in wmpnetwk.exe, Searchprotocol.exe and System.
I just set up a home network and this may have something to do with some of this activity. I would like to know how to control these background processes so I can have the full use of the computer. I think that I know how to control the security app, but the others? Thanks...

Slow performance on new laptop (mostly disk activity)
location:

Hello all,
I have looked around on the internet for answers about this but have found so many different answers (it's win8, it's the HD, it's the memory...).
I've been able to get a new laptop with ecocheques over here, an Asus X301A series. Came pre-installed with Win8 and a bunch of, seemingly totally useless, Asus applications.
I haven't been using this pc very heavily, installed Firefox and Chrome, AVG (full license) and Malwarebytes for the spyware, etc.; It doesn't even have office.
Been working with it for some weeks and seemed to work fine, mostly using it for downloading and streaming online.
This weekend it started to go horribly wrong, when I tried streaming in Firefox, it started with

XP SP3 slows to crawl with no CPU load or disk activity
location:
winsecrets.com - date:
September 3, 2011
Running XP SP3, and starting a month or so ago, out of nowhere the system will suddenly slow to a crawl. It gets so slow, at first I thought the machine had crashed.
This happens randomly, and when it does, the system doesn't recover. Sometimes it happens shortly after bootup, before I've loaded any apps, other times it will happen after hours of normal operation. The system will reboot when told to, but it may take up to 30 minutes for everything to close and XP to finish its housekeeping.
The initial bootup is never a problem, and neither is the eventual reboot after the problem happens, which makes me think it's not a hardware failure or heat issue.
When it happens, there is only a 2-4% CPU load, and little to no disk activity.

Unusual Hard Disk Activity in Resource Monitor
location:

My computer has been stuttering and freezing for the last several months. I have performed a clean install of Windows twice to no avail. I especially notice this lagging when I type in Microsoft Word or even in this forum post. When my computer doesn't lag, it runs fine. My gut feeling tells me it is a hardware issue as my computer can lag even in BIOS. I also noticed lagging when I first had Windows 7 installed before any updates or any drivers were downloaded. The only issue so far that I have found was that my hard drive temperature was 53 degrees C, which is probably too high but I don't think the main cause of my performance issues. I am 100% convinced I have no malware issues.
Things I have tried: Clean install of Windows 7 (I was e

High Disk Activity! Help!
location:

Hey!
I have windows 7 64bit running on my desktop PC. I have Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 @2.34GHZ Processor, 4 GB Ram, Asus P5QPL-AM motherboard and WDC WD32000AAKS-00L9A0 ATA device 320GB HDD.
I am using this system since last one year or so, first i had Windows XP installed on it, and after that i started using Windows 7 64bit since last 3 months. I faced no problem in those 3 months while using Windows 7 64bit on my PC. But since last week, i am facing a strange problem.
While using my PC, its CPU's HDD light always blinks, but at times (since last week) suddenly it becomes static. I checked my task manager, my CPU and Ram usage both are very low. But my Disk Usage (at that time) is 100%. At that time, for some seconds all programs runni

Continual Disk Activity & major slowdown
location:

Hey Guys,
This is my first post & I am having real trouble with my media workstation.
I've had the computer for about a year, a custom build...it's been working fine, then all of a sudden the problem started & now I'm suffering serious lag & slow down even with the most simple tasks (like clicking on the start icon) the HDD light is on continually & I can hear the drive clicking away. It never stops. (Starts when the windows loading screen comes on)
Boot time is also incredibly slow around 10 minutes to boot up.
I've just done a clean install of Windows 7 pro x 64 and the problem still persists...no other software installed other than my graphics & sound card drivers.
The workstation isn't connected to the net I

Constant periodic hard disk activity
location:
microsoft.com - date:
May 14, 2010
My new 64 bit Windows 7 computer has the annoying problem of constantly accessing the hard disk in one second intervals. Resource monitor shows the "System" service writing to disk at about 10-20KB/sec, even when nothing is runnning. CPU use is <2% and system
memory is 8GB. I scanned for malware and spyware and the like with various utilities, the machine checks out clean. I tried turning off search indexing, defragmentation, automatic backups, etc. but the problem persists, even when started up with minimal services
in safe mode.
Can anyine suggest what else I could try to fix this? I'd hate to have to do a reinstall, especially if it won't help.

Win 7 64 bit slowdowns high disk activity
location:

June 30, 2010
Hi Everyone,
I had previously started a thread: win 7 64bit clean install then massive slowdown
in the performance section, which discussed my issues, from which we concluded was hardware related.
I am not sure if I have bad settings, incompatible hardware, or broken stuff that needs replacing. The following will be a summary and update of the current symptoms:
Overall, I am experiencing very intense slowdowns that are seemingly random during my use of windows. However, the effects on the computer range from no noticable effect, as I am typing this on the computer now, to it moving so slow that nothing can be typed or manipulated on screen whatsoever for up to 5 minutes at a time. Typically what happens is that many processes in System

100% Disk Activity Time and HDD health
location:

Hello there. I've been in need of some help here.
First of all, sorry about my English. I haven't been practicing lately...
I've got a Dell Vostro 3450. It has never worked really well, but the performance has been degrading recently.
I have recently updated to Windows 10, in order to see if it would solve the performance problems. But then I started to face others, so I went to the forums to try to cope with them.
One of these matters was the disk activity time spiking to 100% all the time. I've tried all the things I read, but none of them stopped it.
Then I figured it could be something with the HDD itself. So I downloaded HD Tune Pro Trial and the Health screen is the one that follows.
So I ask: how grave is the situation
