Upgrading from Sony Vaio running Vista
location:
7forums.com - date:
September 1, 2012
I'm in Japan, and I have a Sony VAIO notebook, Model VGN-AR52DB, which I bought in Japan about 5 years ago. The computer has an Intel Core 2 CPU; T5500 @ 1.66 GHz; 2046 MB RAM; 32 bit OS; Direct X 10; Phoenix NoteBIOS 4.0, Release 6.1.
I've never used the computer much, mainly because it runs Vista (Home Premium), which I don't like. The computer is still in great shape, so I was thinking of upgrading to Windows 7 (or maybe 8?).
The Microsoft website tells me that if I want to run Windows 7, I need a 1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) processor; 1 GB RAM; and DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver.
So it looks like the computer will handle Windows 7. Right? (But I'm not sure what the "WDDM 1.0" signifies..

Synaptics Touch Driver Not working in Windows 8 Sony Vaio
location:
7forums.com - date:
December 27, 2012
Greetings,
I have recently Install Windows 8 Pro, I have Sony Vaio VPCEE3J0E. Initially, I downloaded Sony's Pointing Driver (Alps) - 7.107.505.106 and it was just for basic touchpad function.
However, I found about Synaptics and downloaded the latest Synaptics V 16.2.21 and installed it.
Now once I go to my Control Panel ==> Mouse ==> Synaptic Properties, it shows nothing, there isn't any option for touchpad gesture etc.
I don't know why it isn't working but I think it should have worked. Please if anyone could help me.
Thanks.

Sony Vaio switchable graphics not working in Windows 8
location:
microsoft.com - date:
October 29, 2012
Sony Vaio, VPCSB, had switchable graphics in Windows 7, no longer does in Windows 8
There is a Intel HD 3000 card and an AMD Radeon™ HD 6470M.
I've installed drivers for both, however AMD states that theirs does not work with switchable graphics. From what I've read Sony is the one that needs to come out with a driver to make the switchable graphics work with Windows 8, however they have not.
Any ideas on what I could do? It's stuck on the Intel card right now, and if I had to choose I'd rather just have the AMD card on all the time.

Sony Vaio VGN-FW140D Windows 7 upgrade?
location:
microsoft.com - date:
October 25, 2009
I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FW140D and when I run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, it says everything is compatible and I have no major issues popping up. The problem I have is from the Sony website because it says that my laptop is NOT capable of running
Windows 7. It does not give me any further information and when I called Sony, they couldn't tell me anything either. Now I'm nervous about installing Windows 7 because I'm not sure if it is going to work. Can anyone offer any help?

Clean Install on my Sony VAIO Laptop
location:
7forums.com - date:

I noted earlier that gregrocker mentioned tech savy members tend to do clean installs of their systems. I am having some difficulty doing a clean install of my Sony VAIO due to a backlit keyboard issue and was wondering if someone might be able to help.
I tried to do a clean install when I first got the system (after making the recovery discs, of course). Unfortunately, I ended up with a backlit keyboard that would randomly turn on and then off with no apparent reason like it was on a time cycle (not a huge deal breaker for a clean install, but rather annoying and worrisome for someone who is a power conservation user). I went to the support site for my laptop and tried to install the drivers and VAIO Control Center for the keyboard light

New to W8: can anyone help me with:
location:

1. minimizing Chrome when in desktop mode? I seem to have to go to Metro then click desktop vs, in W7, simply clicking the "-" button (or use "alt+tab" to cycle back with the arrow keys). Chrome doesn't seem to have a keyboard shortcut to get back to the desktop or a toolbar with the "minimize" button. Am I missing something or is this simply a poor design issue?
2. working around Windows 8's inability to recognize or "talk" with POP servers? It seems unbelievable that Windows 8 and Outlook can't work together if one's email provider uses POP and not IMAP servers. My ISP provider (cox.com) says it's Microsoft; is this accurate? And, if so, is a fix coming?
3. In Metro, the only way I've fou

Keyboard and touchpad not working after restart. Windows 8 Sony Vaio T Series Ultrabook.
location:
microsoft.com - date:
April 22, 2013
My Sony Vaio T Series Ultrabook running Windows 8 had frozen while running a program. Task manager wouldn't work, so I used the sidebar on the touchscreen to restart. After I had restarted, neither the keyboard nor the touchpad were working besides the
backlight of the keyboard. I tried to use system restore to go back a couple days, but no success. In my device manager, there are yellow marks next to my keyboard and touchpad. External mouses don't work either! After troubleshooting, it says my computer
is having trouble with PnP devices. I can only navigate my computer with its touchscreen and it is very tedious. I need this computer to type for school. Please help!
