Hiding my computer from other computers on the LAN
location:
8forums.com - date:
March 22, 2013
My neighborhood shares a wi-fi connection. When some neighbors see my computer is connected to the network, they assume I'm awake and accepting visitors. I want to prevent my computer from appearing when you click on Network and all PC's and connected devices appear.
I'm running Windows 8. I opened a command prompt and entered net config server /hidden:yes and "the command was completed successfully". I then restarted my computer and logged onto the network, however my PC is still visible along with the other computers and devices connected to the network.
What additional steps must I take to accomplish this task?
Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Get Product key from other OS
location:
7forums.com - date:

Ok, since I explained it bad in the other topic, I'll explain it here.
I wiped my Windows 7 since I couldn't boot into it.
Now I am on a new copy freshly installed, and need my old key to activate it.
So how can I go about getting the key from my old installation? I have every file saved (from a complete disk backup). Is it stored in a file, or registry, or what?

Problems upgrading from XP to 7
location:
microsoft.com - date:
February 24, 2013
I am trying to upgrade from XP to Windows 7. I keep getting the message that it cannot detect drivers. It mentions needing an AMD AHCI Compatible RAID controller. I have updated all the drivers I can find. Has anyone else experienced this? After trying
to resolve this issue using a pid professional service (will not mention company) I am now getting a message from AMI on booting that my audio cable is not connected and my floppy is not connected. My audio is working and I only have a DVD/CD drive. Any
ideas for next steps?

Problems restoring from Win 7 backup after clean install
location:
8forums.com - date:
December 28, 2012
I upgraded from Win 7 to 8 after making a backup (using Windows backup) in Win 7. I elected to do a clean install and formatted my C drive. After the upgrade I wanted to restore back my documents which I did using the "Windows 7 file recovery" option in Windows 8 control panel.
This worked fine for the standard folders - "My Documents", "My Pictures" etc. What is missing is other directories which had been created under my user account, for example "C:\Users\Adam\Java" and "C:\Users\Adam\Virtual machines".
Seems I am missing all directories which I created under my user directory. They must be on the system image - is there any way to get them as they can not be seen under

Hide folders from other users windows 7
location:
7forums.com - date:

i have a network of multiple computers connected to a server on which all of them save data on.Each computer has an administrator user on the server. Let's say i want to create a folder and hide it from other users, is there another way to do that besides make it hidden and check "don't show hidden files" ? Because somebody told me that i can hide the folder from others, but i can see it at all times and i don't have to make it hidden from proprieties. That somebody told me it has something to do with sharing, and ownership of that folder, but i didn't understand. I would appreciate an answer... pardon my english i am romanian

Homegroup Sharing : Share files from other drive?
location:

Hi. I have a 128GB SSD for booting and games and a 1tb hard drive for storage. Because my OS is on my boot drive, the location for my videos folder is on the boot drive and I don't want to store my movies on my boot drive because of space constraints. I'm using homegroup to stream movies to my mother's computer. Is there any way I can stream videos from a folder in my storage drive or any alternative method for changing the root destination of the videos folder in my C drive?
