As it seems a bit confusing, I've highlighted the specific instances in RED
Feel free to add to this topic or to bump it back up to the top.
FYI - AVG (and other antivirus') have been implicated in freezes, even after uninstalling. (I use the built in Windows Defender)
FYI2 - Chrome has been implicated in freezes also - try switching to another browser (I use FireFox and IE)

Problems changing from IDE to AHCI in Windows 8
location:
microsoft.com - date:
April 9, 2013
Hey folks --
I've been looking at switching to AHCI mode for our two machines at home. My wife's is running Windows 7 and mine is Win 8. Both of them were installed with legacy IDE running, so I've had to investigate how to make the change after-the-fact. With the
Win 7 machine, I found and installed the correct drivers for the motherboard, did the registry hack, etc. It wasn't as simple as it was supposed to be, but it did finally work. That last boot, Win 7 grabbed onto the drivers and ran with them, and now the
machine is humming along in AHCI mode.

No BIOS on Windows 8? Impossible to boot from other devices.
location:

So 2 months ago I updated my laptop: Toshiba Satellite P870 to Windows 8 Pro from Windows 7. It works fine, but no matter how I boot it (cold boot, restart to boot options, restart etc.), it entirely skips the BIOS screen that was present on Windows 7
(It said something like TOSHIBA or H20 BIOS). It just goes directly to windows 8 with no other options or possibilities. I have tried all different combinations of F2, F8, F12, Delete, ESC, etc., but it is impossible to access the BIOS or boot options. Now,
ordinarily this wouldn't be a problem because windows 8 has that great built in boot options menu. Unfortunately on my computer in the boot options menu, there is no "Use another Device" option. I am currently working with linux and rec

Hi, i am having problems upgrading from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 8 Pro 32bit
location:
microsoft.com - date:
January 24, 2013
I have purchased a Key for Windows 8 Pro, and used the download assistant, i downloaded the file and tried to install , but unfortunately the tablet i am using to install win 8 Pro is a product of china. It seems that although i was using English ( UK ) before
installing, the install file is in chinese language and i can not understand how to proceed, plus i can not find out how to change the language to english. The other problem now is that the Windows 7 Ultimate seems to be corrupt so it looks as if i need a
clean install.
where can i find an 32bit ISO install file for the Windows 8 Pro, as i need to install via a usb stick.
I hope some one will be able to answer this problem.

Problems Downgrading from Windows 7 Ultimate to Professional
location:
7forums.com - date:
October 22, 2012
Hey there I'm currently using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and need to downgrade to Professional.
I've followed the guide that was on this forum as well as many other websites about changing the registry entries which I have done, however my upgrade has failed and given me this message when trying to complete the upgrade: Your current version of Windows is more recent than the version you are trying to upgrade to. Windows cannot complete the upgrade.
I'm assuming this is because the registry editing isn't enough to trick the installation into thinking it is Professional.
Does any one have a solution or has run into this problem before?
Cheers
Fisk

Cannot ping Win 7 from other connected computers
location:
7forums.com - date:
April 23, 2011
Hi, I am new to this forum, this is my first post.
I have setup a test LAN with 4 computers, 3 running different versions of Ubuntu and one running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. Until three days ago I did not have a problem pinging between any of the computers. My project is build one of the Ubuntu boxes to be the gateway/router/firewall/VPN server for the LAN.
On Thursday I suddenly could not ping the Win 7 box from any of the Ubuntu boxes. The Win 7 box can ping any of the Ubuntu boxes. But what is even worse, I no longer am able to connect via Putty from the Win 7 box to any of the Ubuntu boxes.
I have disconnected the LAN from internet access and turned off the firewall on each of the boxes. I have checked all network settings. I

Sharepoint Access from other PC's
location:
winsecrets.com - date:
November 19, 2007
Hi,
I am installing Sharepoint on a server, it is a small network with 5 PCs and a server, I am running Sharepoint on the server with 3 PC's on XP Pro, 1 PC on Windows 2000 and 1 PC on Multi Media Home.
Sharepoint runs fine on the server, all the users are added, all the PC's can connect to the server and read or write files, when it comes to accessing the sharepoint only the Windows 2000 PC will pick up the Sharepoint site, the others give the address not found message.
I have checked all the internet option and they look ok.
Anybody have any clues.
Regards
Mike
