Fatal error on disk when attempting to install Linux
location:
winsecrets.com - date:
March 26, 2013
I have an old PC with XP which isn't working (see http://windowssecrets.com/forums/sho...a-corrupt-file for details). I've now decided to wipe the old disk and install Linux instead (I've got all the files I want off it). However, neither Mint nor Ubuntu will show the disk when I try to install them and using cfdisk gives a fatal error. I assume that the corruption it suffered has corrupted something in the root (?) of the disk so it can't be used as boot device, but I assume the disk is recoverable as I can see the files OK in Linux (it's how I got my files off it).
So what's the best way to deal with this please? I'm happy the whole disk can be wiped and reformatted, but it's not obvious to me (a home Linux newbie) how to go about it.

Unable to initialize external HDD in Disk Management due to I/O error
location:
7forums.com - date:
December 25, 2011
Hi All,
I've recently ran into an almost identical problem that was described (but not resolved) in this thread.
In my case, the drive worked perfectly with my system and only recently stopped appearing in My Computer. Also, my drive is still visible and accessible on Windows XP but is not visible on my Windows 7.
I'd be grateful for any useful advice how to restore the functionlity of this drive on Windows 7.
Please let me know if you require any additional information to help resolve this issue.
Thank you!

Windows 7 disk management utility doesn't allow creation of simple volume: Error maximum number of partitions exceeded
location:

I'm trying to create a new partition in Win7 using disk management utility. Have shrinked existing C drive to create unallocated space. Am not able to create a simple volume with this unallocated space due to the following error message.
"You cannot create a new volume in this unallocated space because the disk already contains maximum number of partitions"
How do I fix this issue or bypass it with some other method to create partitions?

Hi, EDIT: USB to IDE sucks badly! If you have a choice get an external HDD enclosure better!
I am trying to connect a 250 GB IDE HDD to my laptop by using an "USB to IDE" adapter
the disk is recognized by seven, but when i go to "Disk management" and try to initialize it, i get this error message: "the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."
the jumpers are sat so it becomes "master" .. when sat as "slave" seven doesn't even recognize it..
i could access the HDD normally when connected to PC, and windows xp sp3 is installed on it (NTFS)
here are SS:
- the error message:
- the drivers:
Your help would be greatly appreciated!
