Shared folder permissions
location:

XP-RC1. Once again MS has hidden away an important security switch for don-domain users, the security tab to set up folder permissions. The default allows all network users full access to all shared folders, according to the user group they are assigned.
Permissions are available for NTFS only. To turn on permission controls, like the default in W2k, go to control panel, folder options, view, advanced settings, and the very bottom switch, turn OFF the 'simple' (recommended) switch.
The security tab then becomes visible when setting up sharing for a folder. Sheesshh - as Woody would say!

Shared folder access/permissions issue
location:
7forums.com - date:
March 29, 2012
We have a shared folder on a Server 2003 server that is somehow inaccessible from just one Windows 7 PC. When I try to access it using the UNC I get the error message:- \\server_name\share_name is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
This operation is supported only when you are connected to the server.
The 'Everyone' group has 'Modify' permission to the folder, Security and Share permissions, so it's not a permissions issue. If I replace the server name with the server's IP address in the UNC it works, so it's not a connection issue. I can connect to another share on the same server with the server name in the

Windows 7 Notebook cannot access Windows 8 Shared folder on different user account
location:

April 17, 2013
Hi,
I've a new Windows 8 PC and a older Windows 7 Notebook. With the Windows 8 PC I've set it up initially with my windows live account. I then decided to setup a local account instead. Both account has the same user name, if I look under the user folder, I'll
have a folder called USER and another USER_2. The fist USER account is associated to my Windows live account as mentioned.
My Windows 8 PC has not problem accessing the Windows 7 notebook, it always ask for a user and password when I first connect.
My Windows 7 notebook also does not have problem accessing the Windows 8 PC until I removed USER and added USER_2 to the permission list of the sharing setting.

Need Eudora alternative (shared folder)
location:
winsecrets.com - date:

To my complete horror, Eudora 7... which I have been -very- happily using for 15 years... is awful in Windows 7 64.
If you're a Eudora user you know what I'm on about. If not, basically take my word for it that -everyone- eventually gets sick of 'the problem' and moves onto something else. And 'the problem' is that it tends to lock up while scanning for messages. Given up trying trying to fix it. My hope is to find an alternative.
The logical candidate is Thunderbird, however I -cannot- for the life of me figure out how to make it do THE ONE FRICKIN' THING THAT MADE EUDORA TOTALLY INDISPENSABLE... which is... Eudora made it easy to have as many mail accounts as one likes stored on a folder which could be shared by multiple PCs on the same

Folder permissions hell.
location:

From win 7 pro 64bit to win 7 pro 32bit or back constant problems.
Seems doing a ton of research and getting the issues solved is only as good as the next update which screws things up to where they were before.
The problem was there in xp and it has persisted. I cant believe that one of the base functions of a network is constantly broken. My network works fine. I have input director zipping over two workstations no problem. Both comps have speedy internet yet they cant swap simple files with each other because of those fracking folder permissions.
I give up, back to the zip drive, sheesh.

September 20, 2011
Dear All,
I am using Win 7 SP1 (Host OS).
I have installed Oracle VM VirtualBox v4.1.2 where Win XP SP3 is the guest OS.
Please let me know how do i share a folder from my host OS which is visible and accessible from the guest OS (Win XP) in VirtualBox?
In VirtualBox even though I have browsed for a folder (i intend to share) under "Shared folder" option in Settings with Auto-Mount=Yes & Access=Full, the same is not visible when i power-on the guest OS
Please suggest.
Thanks in advance,
Troy.
P.S.>> Sorry if this topic has already been discussed and answered in some other thread.

Can't access shared folder in Diagnostic or Normal Startup
location:
winsecrets.com - date:

I discovered this problem because I've been trying to install WD TV Live. I can access Netflix through it, but I can't access shared folders on my XP. I can see the PC, but when I try to connect, it asks me for a user/password. I tried adding a usergroup and giving privs to everything, but that didn't work.
Eventually, I tracked the problem down to not being able to access a shared folder from my PC using "Run %computername%. The shared folder shows up, but when I try to open it (on the PC), I get: "//computer/foldername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource." I assume that once this problem is solved, the WD stuff will start working.
If I restart in Safe Mode, I can access the fold

Windows 8 Pro RTM 0x80070035 error trying to access a shared folder on Vista
location:
microsoft.com - date:
October 28, 2012
I see this error appears a lot in this forum. So, I'm not going to go thru each one, looking for Windows 8 posts
Anyway, I see from a few searches in Google this is starting to become a prob, with some people, who use Windows 8.
If a PC (with a previous version of Windows on it), is networked to a Windows 8 PC, it can access the shared folder in Win8. However, Windows 8 cant access a folder on previous versions of Windows.
It comes up with a message saying the above. The 1st time I clicked on diagnose, it said there were no probs with this computer.
But there is a config prob with the networked PC (Vista). There is nothing wrong with Vista. It networked fine with the previous version of Windows I had installed (Win7).

Windows XP Media Center shared folder issue...
location:
microsoft.com - date:
October 7, 2010
I recently installed a new router on my small network. I have a main desktop pc that I use as a "server". But just as far as saving shared files on it. The PC runs XP Media Center. Well ever since I installed the new modem/router I can't access the shares
from other pc's on the network.
When I installed the new router I didn't make any changes on the pc's. I've double checked the folders to make sure they were still shared and they were.
I also checked to make sure they were on the same workgroup. I can ping each computer from each other, So I know they can communicate through the network. Not sure what to do next. Im at a loss. Any help would be appreciated.
