Networking Windows 7 to Windows XP - Able to connect via IP address, but not computer name. Why?
location:
microsoft.com - date:

One computer is running W7 64-bit, and the other is running XP Pro. If I ping one computer from the other, they can see each other fine. And if I use the IP address, I can access files and print on the XP machine FROM the W7 machine (but not vice-versa).
What I don't understand is, why can't each computer simply access the other using a basic WORKGROUP setup with the computer names? Can anyone help? Just so you know, here are a few things I have already verified:
Both computers have the same workgroup name (WORKGROUP). Both computers have their folders shared so that "everyone" on the network has full access. The Windows firewall is running, but no other. The XP machine connects directly to the internet via an ethernet cable that's plug

Can ping computer by IP address but not by computer name
location:

I have a Dell Vostro laptop that cannot see anything shared on the network. Email and internet work just fine, but I cannot access the shared folders on the Windows 2000 Server, nor can I install the network printers.
If I ping the server or any other machine in the domain by its IP address, it responds. If I ping the same server by its name it does not respond. If I try to map a drive to the share I get a "not found, please check your spelling and try again".
laptop is Windows 7 Home Premium, 32 bit with 4 GB RAM.
I have done the following:
1. Disable host file.
2. Ipconfig / renew and Ipconfig /flushdns
3. Reboot the router.
4. Safe mode with networking
5. Turn off anti virus and firewall
6. Ensure network discovery is on
7.

Can connect to share by IP but not computer name
location:

Hi,
I have a Windows 7 home Premium box and I want to share folders and a printer with 2 XP laptops. I've turned off homegroups and all PCs are using the same workgroup.
One XP laptop can connect to the shared folders and printer with no problem and the shares appear in My Network places etc.
The other XP laptop ** can't ** connect via \\COMPUTERNAME (I get access denied error). Nor does anything show up in My Network Places. One way I can get it to connect is do this:
- Connect via IP - \\102.168.1.101
- a password box appears, so I enter the my user name and password for my Win 7 account (I don't have a password account set up on the XP laptop, but I am using the same username as on the Win 7 box)
- I can then see the sha

Remote Desktop - Only Connects With IP Not Computer Name?
location:
7forums.com - date:
July 15, 2012
Hello Everyone,
I recently got my remote desktop working in my home LAN, but I can ONLY connect to to my machine via its IP address. It refuses to connect through the actual computer-name as I would prefer to.
I'm assuming here that there is a possible issue with the IP is tied to the computer-name, aka some type of DNS issue. Keep in mind I am not trying to access my computer "globally" I am just trying to connect to via its computer name when I am at home and connected to my home LAN.
If anyone can offer any suggestions or help, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
--Asif

Windows 7 - IP address conflict error message pops up periodically. Error Message "Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer.

Error Message "Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact you network administrator for help resolving this issue. More details are available in the Windows System event log"
Does anybody have a simple (for a dummy) way of resolving this. If I switch my wireless router and Laptop off and switch both back on again this sorts the problem temporarly but it does not provide a final solution. I am using a new Laptop and my old one
has been scrapped so I don't know where this 'conflict' is coming from. My old Laptop had Windows XP OS and my new one Windows 7. I hope someone can supply a solution to this annoying problem.

New HP ENVY came with windows 8 but not activating. Why?
location:

I bought a new HP ENVY 4-1114TU Sleekbook four days ago that came with Windows 8.
I entered the product key and it installed fine but does not activate. It says the product key has been blocked.
I've tried everything from editing the registery to recovering, refreshing, restarting windows but nothing helps.
I've been told that upgrade versions are the one that have an issue activating when clean installed but this one came with the laptop so why wont it install?
I'm in Pakistan and needless to say Microsoft support number does not respond there. Tried e-mailing microsoft support about it too but they didn't help, saying I should contact HP or something.
I've been on it for four days, any help will be appreciated.

I need to be able to wake my computer from sleep. This worked perfectly in Windows 7 before I upgraded but now it is broken. I have exhausted everything I can think of and find online: My NIC is the only wake armed deviceIn the device manager it's set to wake on magic packetIn the device manager it's set to never be turned off to conserve powerIn Power Button options I've tried toggling fast bootIn Advanced power options I've tried toggling allow hybrid sleep
WoL works when I shut the computer down but not from sleep or hibernate.
This guy seems to be in a similar situation: Phil Pendlebury – Windows 8 – Wake Over LAN – It Works! – It but he was able to make it work from hibernate.
I would be OK with
