I have just reinstalled windows 7 on my system and windows update is not checking for updates. When I go to the Windows update section there is a window with a red shield with an 'x' that says 'check for updates for your computer' with a clickable icon
at the bottom saying check for updates. When i click it nothing happens. Tried using the fixit software but this 'encountered an error' and could do nothing. No error code given.

Program File X86
location:
7forums.com - date:
October 25, 2010
I have uninstalled a program (via control panel etc). And when I check within the ProgramFiles folder it is no longer there. How ever when I look in the Program File X86 folder the program is still there.
I thought I must have made a mistake so went back to Control panel / Program files, but the program is no longer on the list.
How do I uninstall this program if not on the Program File list? Do I simply delete the folder?
FYI the program is "Polar" a fitness software program, unrelated to operating system etc.
Thanks

Two Program File Folders
location:
7forums.com - date:
June 2, 2010
I have noticed when I want to uninstall programs, not all my installed programs show up even though they function well. I explored into my main C: drive and found out there were two program file folders. One named Program Files and the other named Program Files x86. The program files in x86 are all in the installed programs list, while only some from Program Files are in the list. What if I want to uninstall some of the programs not showing up.

Win7 Pro 64 bit duplicate program file folders
location:
microsoft.com - date:
February 10, 2010
I clean installed Win7 Pro 64 bit OS from Win7 Pro 32 bit on my laptop and duplicate Program Files Folders (with and without x86 designation) have been created. The duplicated files are Windows programs, Internet Explorer, Windows Defender, Windows Mail,
Windows Media Player, Windows NT, Windows Photo Viewer, Windows Portable Devices and Windows Sidebar.
Does this mean that these duplicate Windows apps are needed for 32 bit and 64 bit software to be able to work with that type of software respectively? Do I really need a 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Internet Explorer, Windows Defender, Mail, Media Player,
NT, Photo Viewer, Portable Devices and Sidebar?
It would have been nicer just to have one set of these Windows app

MS Office Icons disappeared from Program File
location:
7forums.com - date:
August 11, 2010
Howdy,
I was wondering if anyone could help me with this problem.
I dragged two MS Office ICONs (WORD and ACCESS) from the MS Office folder in Program Files(via the START bar menu) to the desk top, hoping to create shortcuts.
When I looked back in the MS Folder in Program Files (via START), I saw that the ACCESS and WORD icons were no longer there.
I opened MS Office file through My Computer> Local Drive (C> Program Files > Microsoft Office.
There were no icons or folders with MS Office apps names in there. I copied and pasted the WORD and ACCESS icons back in the folder anyway, but when I opened Program Files via START, I didn't see them.
How can I return the icons properly to the Microsoft Office file in Program Files

2nd 86x Program file folder
location:
7forums.com - date:

I have 2 program folders listed as x86 on my 64 bit machine. This 2nd x86 program folder contains games that were downloaded and installed from Big Fish games (and those are the only programs that ever go into that 2nd x86 folder).
Other info (that may be important?): I recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. This 2nd 86x program folder was also on my Vista install. I upgraded using the method here to create the windows .old folder process... and that 2nd 86x folder installed into my C drive automatically. (I also used the HP upgrade assistant as directed by HP.
It really drives me crazy that I don't know why I have 2 of these folders. Doesn't seem to cause any issues at all, but wanted to get advice/opinion as to why I have 2 of th
