contents of C:\temp folder (XP Pro SP1)
location:
winsecrets.com - date:
April 20, 2003
I have come across some subfolders in the C:temp folder which I do not recognise. They date back to 2001, and I suspect might be old downloads which are no longer needed. Is it safe to delete the files?
Many thanks

Desktop Refresh Rate (XP Pro/SP1)
location:

September 16, 2002
This is more of a curiosity for I don't know that it is a problem. I've only recently noticed that every 10 minutes my desktop refreshes, is this normal? What is the purpose of this refresh? Can it be adjusted?
Thanks, John

MS-DOS program in full-screen mode (XP Pro SP1)
location:
winsecrets.com - date:
October 3, 2003
I have recently moved to Windows XP Pro from Windows 98 SE. I have just installed an MS-DOS cashbook program that I have used since PCs ran MS-DOS. It is a "well behaved" program that runs in full-screen mode.
Windows XP it seems has another definition of full-screen and displays the program in the top halp of the screen, with the bottom half black. I have tried compatibility mode, Windows 95, Windows 98, 256 colours, 640x480 etc etc but the results are unchanged ... it runs in the top half of the screen only.
I would be very grateful if someone could tell me how to get this program to run in full-screen mode.

Unable to change Power Scheme (XP Pro SP1)
location:

I am using Windows XP Pro at work and would like to change the Power Scheme from the default. When I try this I get the following error message:
Power policy manager unable to set the active policy.
Not all privileges are assigned to the caller.
I log onto a Windows 2000 domain and our IT adminstrator has made my domain user account a member of the Adminstrators local group on the laptop.
Any ideas most appreciated.

Network Card Problem new questions (XP Pro SP1)
location:
winsecrets.com - date:
January 30, 2006
I am asking this question again in a slightly different manner so I might be able to get some help.
My card, a DFE-530TX, was working now there is a problem. It is not the card itself as I tried another card and also tried them in another PCI slot.
In Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, the card is flagged as having a problem. If you uninstall it, then look for new hardware, windows will install it but ends with the error message saying "install unsuccessful as the card will not start" and gives an error code 10. Troubleshooting says it can't resolve the problem.
I looked at the Dlink site and it says the drivers for the DFE-530TX are built into windows XP. However, there are drivers available for a DFE-530TX+ wh

Kernel Replacement (XP Pro SP1)
location:
winsecrets.com - date:

To make a long story short, does anyone know the exact procedure and syntax to replace the "kernel" ? Approx. twice a week I get a blue screen either on a shut down or on a resume from hibernation that puts a "KernelFaultCheck" in start-up. If I delete the mini-dump that was created and remove the reg entry I am OK for 2-4 days. This all started after adding a D-Link DWL-AB650 wireless card which works flawlessly in 2 other Win2K Pro laptops. Yes they are the latest drivers and yes I did an uninstall-reinstall. If I did a "system repair" is there any downside to it

Can't boot: Driver corruption + ??? Win XP Pro SP1
location:
winsecrets.com - date:
September 18, 2003
Geez I'm dyin' here. I've tried everything I know, everything I can find on the web, and quite a bit of stuff I don't know, and...
Whenever I try to boot up normally, I get the message:
"Driver_Corrupted_MMPOOL" and then a very quick reboot. Normally it flashes by so fast I can't read it.
Sometimes, I also get "File corrupted: windows stopped because of corrupted HAL.DLL"
I also find that all my USB ports are unoperational; according to Device Manager, they could not start. The devices are: "Stnadard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller," 4 different "VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller," and 4 different "USB Root Hubs."
I've also tried all the fixes suggested at

DOS boot w/ USB support (Win XP Pro SP1)
location:

Anyone have some suggestions about creating a DOS boot disk with USB hard drive support or modifying a DOS boot disk with Novell VLM support (already in use) but adding USB support so we can continue to use the non 32 bit Ghost currently licensed?
Any pointers, web sites or questions are welcomed.
Thanks,
Jester

Password Reset Disk (Windows XP Pro Sp1)

The Password Reset Disk tip in the Vol 3 No.17 issue is great! But I'm wondering... is the disk you create specific to the computer you created the disk on? That is, can the disk be used on any Windows XP PC or only the specific PC where it originated?
