Installed Critical Updates -System VERY Slow (XP Pro SP1 + Updates)
location:
winsecrets.com - date:

I just took Woody's advice and downloaded and installed all the critical updates and patches. Now my system is dragging. The hourglass spins endlessly on some tasks, takes forever to load some programs and won't get past the "Scanning Compressed Files" stage in Disk Cleanup. Does anyone know if the patches, updates and service packs compress and store the files that they fix or replace. I never had any problems prior to the installation of these patches and know not to intentionally set the system to compress old files for just this reason. Some form of "massive file activity" at 4 AM shutdown my GoBack program, thereby wiping out all restore opportunities. The subsiquent activity seems to be related to Symantec bu

Hi all, me again
This morning when I went to use my computer, for some reason it started running really slow. My hubby was on it last night, and said it was running just fine when he shut it down.
I have Norton System Works, and normally that works great giving my computer the once over. However, this morning every time I tried to do most anything, the program stopped responding. Here's everything I've tried with no avail:

Impact of MS Updates, system very slow
location:
microsoft.com - date:
June 14, 2012
1. My system has slowed down noticeably in loading applications and Word documents and additionally, my boot process now unnecessarily carries out a 3-phase auto chkdsk of one of my 4 partitions (F:), each time finding no bad sectors or other damage and
then completing the boot up uneventfully. (I also confirmed the fault-free status of my entire disk with a 5-phase chkdsk separately). 2. The two troubles began when, on MS Updates prompt, I installed the following 8 updates on June 13, 2012: (1) ****. Security
Update to IE.6 for XP (KB2699988). (2) Security Update .Net Framework 2.0 SP2, Server 2003 and WinXPx86 (KB2656369). (3) Security Update .Net Framework 2.0 SP2, Server 2003 and WinXPx86 (KB2686828). (4) Security Update WinXP (KB26

System Restore and Hidden Partition (XP Pro - SP1)
location:
winsecrets.com - date:
December 27, 2003
Just before Christmas, I installed a new DVD burner in my Dell 4600 (80 gig drive - Drive C and a NEC cd burner - Drive D). The hard drive was a single partition (or so I thought). Originally, I had Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum installed (fully updated with the latest patches). As Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 came bundled with the new TDK DVD burner, I dutifully uninstalled Easy CD Creator 5. I then installed the TDK drive and the new software.
Disaster! CD Creator 6 would start to launch, and then it would terminate. This didn't surprise me particularly as I have had more than one bad experience with Roxio software. Using MSCONFIG, I removed the applications that CD Creator was launching at startup. Then, I tried to restart the computer. I

Quick Launch Shortcut - Strange Errors (XP Pro SP1 + Critical UDs)
location:
winsecrets.com - date:
September 22, 2003
I began having a problem about 2 days ago with 2 of the shortcuts in my Quicklaunch Taskbar.
The shortcut to the G: partition on my HD would produce an error (see attachment) as would the shortcut to the OEM installed Zip drive (D0) . I can only guess at the reason, and that would be a power surge during the "hurricane" the other night, excepting that the PC was off and behind a UPS and 2 surge-protectors. The only change to the system was removing Roxio's GoBack after the problem began, for an unrelated reason. However, after removing GoBack the shortcut to the G: partition began to work normally, but the problem with the shortcut to the Zip drive was still

Mapped Network Drive causes system hang offline (XP Pro SP2)
location:
winsecrets.com - date:
January 19, 2007
I have two laptops and a PC - My new laptop is an IBM Thinkpad T60 running XP Pro with SP2 as is my PC (IBM ThinkCentre running XP Pro SP2) and I have recently reformatted my old laptop (Acer Aspire 2001) and reimaged the machine which contains XP Home SP2. All updates have been applied to all machines so they are all current.
The problem I am having is with Mapped Netowrk Drives.
Tha first issue is with the Acer Aspire - When at home, I have connected the two via a crossover cable and assigned Alternate IP Addresses as follows:
Acer Aspire - 192.168.100.99
Thinkpad T60 - 192.168.100.98
Both have a gateway of 192.168.100.100.
I have then added an entry into my hosts file on the Thinkpad T60 as follows:
192.168.100.99 SW-ACER-NTBK

IE and Adobe slow print (XP Pro SP1, IE 6.x, Adobe Reader 6.x and 7.x)
location:
winsecrets.com - date:
February 24, 2006
I have a client with an XP Pro SP1 machine that for all user profiles prints woefully slow to a network printer. This is a recent development and the printer is a Ricoh 1060.
Tried repairing the 6.01 app, the 6.02, 6.03 and 6.04 upgrades. Uninstalled all the above and reinstalled. Uninstalled all the above and upgraded to Reader 7.x with no change.
I'm trying to come up with a browser setting that might help this since it is possible that it is the browser connection that is crimping the performance. Tomorrow I am going to confirm that the behavior is the same with or without the browser integration option selected, ie, forcing the PDFs to open in a separate Adobe Reader window and not the browser.
Anyone ever run into a significant slow

I have an upgrade copy of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit that I am trying to install on my home computer which is running XP pro 32 bit. When I try to install it it says that it is not compatible with win32 operating system. My system is 64 bit compatiable. It
says that I need to boot with the install disk and choose the custom option. I tried booting the system from the Windows 7 upgrade DVD. but the system will not boot. What do I need to do to install the 64 bit version of Windows 7.
