Restore option from external USB HDD unseen
location:
7forums.com - date:

Greetings,
Long story short, I've recently installed Windows 7 onto partition 3 of my SSD. I have a Windows 7 image I'd like to restore from on an external HDD via USB onto this partition. While Computer recognizes the external drive, System Restore does not. System Restore is trying to look on the network for the image, but it should see it on external.
I'm not even certain Windows 7 can restore from an external to the same partition Windows 7 is running on; seems likes its trying to overwrite itself as it runs the process. Any assistance with this would be much appreciated!
Long story long, I own a MBP 5,2. Yep, I know, boo! I once had it working great with dual-boot via BootCamp with OSX and Windows 7. Needed Linux for a CompSci

Help with a complete system image restore from VHD files?
location:
7forums.com - date:
October 24, 2011
Not as simple as the title sounds. Believe me.
To start: I did a complete backup of my system a month ago. I saved it on an external HD. There are three directories: Backup (Date) with two VHD files in this directory, Catalog, SPPMetadataCache and a file entitled MediaID. Well, about a week ago, I was having a hard time logging on to the system. I would get to the password and the system would not allow any keyboard entry and would not respond to Ctrl-Alt-Del. After a few attempts to figurer out the problem, I decided to do an image restore. When attempting this through the Control Panel, system repair disc and Windows 7 Installation disc, nothing worked because none of them recognized the VHD files. (I should add here that this is

How do I update my restore partition from Win 7 to 8?
location:
microsoft.com - date:
May 22, 2013
In January 2013 I upgraded from Win 7 Home Premium to Win 8 Pro, via download. On 5/15/13 I attempted to boot up, only to discover my boot directory and system in general, had been completely corrupted. I was fortunately able to save all my files, but
my OS was gonzo. I found many ignore commands sprinkled throughout my OS, which is why I believe it must have been a virus, and sadly I believe that virus to have come through the Windows store via a game update. Of course I have no way to prove that, but
I digress.
My restore would not function, so I was forced to refresh back to the factory installed Win 7, and then wait through another 5 hour download to re-install Win 8. I have completed a backup on an external hard

How do i restore files from a windows 7 backup on a windows 8 pc?
location:

Hey guys, i recently clean-installed my desktop to Win8, but before doing so i made a backup of important files using Win7, which was installed previously. I went though the steps to back it up in 7 on my secondary drive, D, then rebooted, booted from
the 8 disk, and custom installed to wipe the C drive clean. Now when i boot up the backup utility built into 8 it doesnt show my backup anywhere. i've configured the Windows 7 Backup utility to make a backup to that drive, but it still doesnt show the file.
Anyone know how i can do this? i'd hate to have to reinstall 7 on this computer to get the files back. It would be quite a while before i could reinstall 8 again due to some specific circumstances i'm in. (Dad's got the disk, i'm in col

How to boot from USB connected SATA HDD
location:
7forums.com - date:
April 22, 2013
1. I have created a clone of my boot drive (SATA) for backup and security reasons.
2. Have tested the clone by substituting the normal boot drive with it. Everything works normally.
3. Would like to be able to boot from the clone when it is externally connected via USB and a SATA adapter.
4. Have adjusted BIOS to make removable drive first in boot sequence and have selected USB as removable drive. Have tried all three available USB settings for removable drive namely:
CFC I20A, SDC I20A, SMC I20A.
5. None of these settings have worked and, on reboot, the USB drive is ignored and boot is from internal drive.
Ideas anyone?
Windows 7 Home Premium, desktop.

How do I install windows from a External HDD (usb)
location:

Here's my problem (Please read first)...
I had Win 7 Home 64bit installed, but I've been having loads of issues with it, crashes, dvd drive not working properly, and a reallllllly long blank screen after "Starting Windows" Screen (around 2-3 minutes)
After trying many, many different methods of fixing these issues, none of which did a darn thing.... I decided that I just needed to reload windows.
SO I reloaded windows from within the OS itself, (Not a Clean install) but that didn't fix my long boot problem. So I tried a clean install - I formatted the partition I wanted windows on (The same one it was on) and started the install only to get a screen
that said I didn't have the proper driver for my DVD drive installed, WELL, it's
