Help with permissions, sharing, ownership?
location:

Hello. Two questions I'm seeking help with. Relatively minor, but I'd like to learn how this stuff works, so... I have two near-identical Dell PCs, freshly upgraded with SSDs and Windows 8 Pro. I have a habit of saving a text file in C:\ root to log basic install info. For some reason, on one PC I can't edit the file when it's saved in C:\, but on the other, I can (I get the message when trying to save: "Access to c:\file.txt denied"). I can save files to C:\, just can't edit/save it once there. As far as I can tell, the share and permission settings look the same (they should be, I don't believe I've changed any, but perhaps I'm not looking in all the right places.) On both PCs, I'm logged in under the origi

need help with file sharing between windows 7 and xp
location:
7forums.com - date:

OK, so i just recently got a laptop with windows 7 on it. My desktop has windows xp and i'm trying to make it so i can copy files to and from my laptop to my desktop and vice-versa without having to set it up every time and so that i can just turn on the desktop and it will be able to share files with my laptop right away.
So far, i have gotten my desktop to be able to access my laptop through "My Network Places" in the "The Internet" section. But on my laptop, it shows my desktop (and what my desktop used to be named for some reason) in the network on the side of the explorer window. when i double click on one, it says that windows cannot access *computer name* and when i press to diagnose the problem, it says to make

Help with sharing files across computers (XBMC)
location:
7forums.com - date:
January 15, 2013
I'm a total noob so sorry in advance.
I currently own a PC and a laptop. I have an external HD on my PC and I'm trying to be able to access those files through my laptop via XBMC. I've followed many tutorials online to no avail. I don't know much about networking or file sharing so there's my first downfall. I've tried setting up a home group on my main PC but the join home group option is grayed out on the laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
PC is windows 7 Professional x64
Laptop is Windows 8 x64

I have recently been struggling since the beginning of the week trying to install an OEM copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit onto my new Acer Aspire V3 laptop which came with Windows 8 64 bit pre-installed.
I made a thread over at Seven Forums: Ordered new laptop with Win 8 but plan to install Win 7 - partitions? - Windows 7 Forums However, I've gotten more and more confused and was advised to come over here to ask for assistance.
Here are the tutorials I have been linked to:
Step 1 to 5 of: Downgrade Windows 8 to Windows 7
Follow: Dual Boot Installation - Windows 8 and Windows 7 or Vista
My current hard drive setup looks like this:
The "Win 7 (E:)" is a new partition I made for Windows 7 to be installed onto. Th

Help with "News" app in Windows 8?
location:
microsoft.com - date:

Hello everyone, I came here to ask something about the "News app". I've installed Windows 8 Pro and i'm located in Santa Fe (city), Santa Fe (province), Argentina. The thing is that I can't add specific region sources.
I've searched (help sent by Windows Support admin KRG via twitter - thanks to him/her) here and there are some things like "My news" and "videos" when you right-click within the app that I think is only available when you change region to English - United States.
The app works perfectly in my opinion and I haven't seen major problems, just that one.
Yes, I do have a little list of sources when I put my own region but is quite bad and limitated. When you change region to U.S, you get all the features and yo

Please help with website maintainance
location:
winsecrets.com - date:
September 27, 2012
Hi everyone, I am a new website owner/builder, and my question is; where can I find info about maintaining my site?
I have the site up and running, using Zara Web Developer Pro X, when I need to update the site, what do I do?
I have screwed the site up trying to update before and had my host (JustHost) fix it for me.
My problem is; I don't know what to do with the files already in the public_html folder, delete them ( which ones?), download them and change them(how?).
I have read the software info, and there is plenty of info on getting your site up and running, but not how to update.
I also have several books telling me how to build and publish, but not much about maintaining.
I used FileZilla to change site before.

Need help with locking down Windows 8 Metro UI
location:
7forums.com - date:
October 29, 2012
Hi guys,
I have got a pc that my whole family use and I've just completed a fresh Windows 8 Pro installation.
I have created 2 accounts:- Admin Kids
I know that Metro UI cannot be disabled and I don't mind keeping it, but surely if I want to be able to lock the kids account, so that they don't accidently mess up, I should be able to at least stop them from modifying app shortcuts and lockdown the Metro Start menu?
I currently have loads of apps, such as Admin tools, WinRAR etc.
If I setup the Metro UI to the apps I want, how do I stop them from removing/adding or modifying the menu?
Thanks
