How do I change to a high speed USB port?
location:
microsoft.com - date:
January 25, 2011
Twice recently when I connected my new Sony audio recorder to my PC via the USB cable, a box has popped up that says something like: "This is a hi-speed USB device. For faster performance, connect it to one of these available hi-speed USB ports. Then it
shows a diagram. I though right-clicking on one of the other port symbols might give me a dialog box telling how to switch over. No such luck. Did a lot of other poking around and still can't figure out where XP lets me change to the higher speed USB ports.
Help?

speed up PC & free disk space (service pack 2)

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)
I just found out you can do these 3 things to improve PC performance-
1) using "msconfig" you can "uncheck" boxes in the menu (even if you aren't familiar with the entries) & this'll keep unneeded programs from starting up when you start computer.
2) in the add/remove programs list you can uninstall "unfamiliar" programs (the desktop "help" icon says not to mess with unfamiliar listings *to be safe* but it doesn't mean there isn't a way).
3) in the add/remove programs list it *doesn't* list all programs (there are *hidden* programs you can bring up in the list). You can unistall all these "unfamiliar"

So, for as I've measured, Speed isn't much different from Windows 7, but then again, they are using almost identical hardware. How is Windows 8 running on XP or Vista?

Enabling superfetch/ prefetch to speed up HDD read/ write.
location:
8forums.com - date:

Hi all;
Good day,
I would like to know how to boost the read/ write speed of my Hard Disk Drive. Someone told me about some innovation in Windows 8 such as Superfetch, Prefetch, Ready Boost, etc - something that is supposedly utilizing the idle capacity of your RAM/ SSD to boost the read/ write speed in the Hard Disk Drive.
Currently, my laptop is setup as follows;
120GB C Drive: running on SSD - has the Windows 8 and all apps installed in it,
500GB D Drive: has all the Libraries folders installed in it.
RAM = 4GB. PLanning to increase it by an additional 4GB. ~ it this helps.
Hence, how can i use the SSD or RAM to improve on the Hard Disk read/ write speed? Currently, my Intel SSD toolbox is showing as follows:

I just got XP Pro and Network Bridge Connection Speed (XP Pro SP1)

Oh no, another really busy board to read! <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>
I was puzzling over a feature of my new Dell Inspiron called "Network Bridge," where my TCP/IP settings live. I've read a little about this thing, but I don't understand why I need it when I only have one active network connection (I disabled the Firewire connection). Anyway, my real problem was that I wasn't getting the full speed I wanted now that I have to move about 3 GB of files onto this computer.
Based on some online discussions, it appears that the bridge uses the slowest speed supported by the "bridged" connections. I lucked into getting the right speed by disabling and re-enabling the Network Bridge.
