location:
8forums.com - date:
June 27, 2013
With the announcement of the availability of the Windows 8.1 Preview , and the release of the Windows 8.1 Preview ISO images this morning, we would like to encourage all organizations to evaluate this new release, including all the new features described in What's New in Windows 8.1, as well as all the smaller enhancements and refinements throughout the product. We look forward to receiving your feedback as we begin this important part of the Windows 8.1 release process.
Remember that Windows 8.1 is still in development, and as such there is always some risk involved when using it, so testing on lab and other non-critical computers is recommended. For broad deployments we recommend that you target final Windows 8.1 release later this

Windows 8.1 Preview KB2849636 Update fails to install
location:
microsoft.com - date:
June 26, 2013
It is very unfortunate that even after waiting so long, I am not able to download Windows 8.1 even if I want to. I went to the download page & clicked "Get it Now" after which it downloads KB2849636 update. On opening it up, Windows Update Standalone Installer
simply writes up "The update is not applicable to your computer". Why on Earth will this happen when Windows 8 is already running. I don't know what to do! Please help if anyone can.

How To Create a Windows 8.1 (Preview) System Image
location:
8forums.com - date:
July 1, 2013
I thought 8.1 was supposed to make things easier? Not so for creating a System Image. Now, you have to use the Windows PowerShell (Admin) to get the job done. The image below will show the command string to use (boxed in red) and my target drive is/was Z:
Zoom image to enlarge please.
You can use your installation media to access the Repair function and restore your System Image from there.
Have fun!

Windows 8.1 preview font smoothing
location:
8forums.com - date:
July 1, 2013
Hi,
Never got the chance yet to download windows 8.1 preview but I'm interested to know if it introduced any thing new to the font smoothing technology which is bad looking and not as sharp when compared to e.g. to OS X.
I tested the original windows 8 in a virtual machine and I didn't endure how fonts look on it overall whether I'm using the OS itself or using applications like Office 2013.
Thanks

Launching an app is much more difficult in Windows 8.1 Preview
location:
microsoft.com - date:
July 2, 2013
Launching an app from the Start Screen is much more difficult in Windows 8.1 Preview than it was in Windows 8.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Install Windows 8.1 Preview.
2. Install Visual Studio 2013 Preview; a Visual Studio shortcut is not added to the Start Screen. (Change from Windows 8.)
3. On the Start Screen, start type "visual". In Windows 8, "Apps" would be searched automatically, and "Visual Studio 2013" would be the top hit (or one of the top hits). In Windows 8.1 Preview, no matching apps are shown by default.
4. In the suggestion list that appears in the pane on the right, tap "visual studio" (at the bottom of the pane). The Start Screen is replaced with: Results for "visual studio"; unfortunately, "Visual Studio 2013" d

The Windows 8.1 Preview Start Button Is an “Insult to...
location:
8forums.com - date:
July 4, 2013
Microsoft has brought back the Start button in Windows 8.1 Preview, but instead of launching the old and popular Start Menu, it actually gets users to the new Start screen.
The Start button is always visible when working on the desktop, just to make sure that users can quickly access the Start screen, while in Metro mode consumers are required to move the mouse cursor in the lower left corner to launch it.
Unsurprisingly, many Windows 8 adopters are fairly disappointed with Microsoft’s own way to address customer feedback, claiming that the new Start button is “an insult to everyone’s intelligence.”

Windows 8.1 Preview Not Working on All Computers
location:
8forums.com - date:
June 27, 2013
Microsoft yesterday released the new Windows 8.1 Preview and even if the update is available as a free download for all Windows 8 users, not everybody can install it.
For some reason, a number of Windows 8 consumers cannot deploy Windows 8.1 Preview, even though the update shows up in the Store after deploying the original patch.
We’ve contacted Microsoft for more information on this and it appears that it’s all because of different language packs, so the company recommends users to wait until an official fix is released and only then deploy Windows 8.1 Preview.
“The base language of your OS (the language chosen during setup) is outside one of the 13 supported languages for Windows 8.1 Preview. Please note that any other lan
