May 30, 2013
Before we launched Windows 7, we envisioned what the next version of Windows would need to deliver. We made a bet that the PC landscape and industry would undergo a significant transformation driven by an increase in mobility. That bet underscores the changes we made with Windows 8 – it’s a generational leap forward. We built Windows 8 for a world where touch is a first class interaction model, the same as mouse and keyboard; and where there’s a proliferation of innovative and diverse devices that are highly mobile, always on the go and always connected. Windows 8 was built on the reality that the lines between our work and personal lives have blurred.
We’re only a bit more than seven months into this new, bold approach to

Note: Testing of Windows 8.1 Preview (Warning)
location:
microsoft.com - date:
June 6, 2013
It has come light that testing the Windows 8.1 preview will not be as straightforward and will involve some prerequisites.
Do not install it on a production machine or boot drive.
Microsoft Senior Product Marketing Manager Michael Niehaus reiterated that message in the RT in the Enterprise session on Tuesday. When the 8.1 preview is available,
Windows 8 and Windows RT users will receive a Windows Update notification. That update will trigger the new bits to show up in the Windows Store, where potential testers will be able to
read the description and choose whether or not to install.
Once the final versions of Windows 8.1 are available, after their release to manufacturing, those who have downloaded the preview

The official documentation that reached the web recently reveal that Windows 8 users should basically make the switch to Windows 8.1 Preview via the Windows Store, as this is the safest, easiest, and fastest way to do it.
Separate ISOs will also be offered for those who wish to set up a dual-boot configuration and install Windows 8.1 Preview on a different partition. Here’s what Microsoft says about it.

Installed Windows8-RT-KB2849636-x64 No Windows 8.1 Preview after reboot
location:
microsoft.com - date:
June 26, 2013
I'm running Windows 8 Pro (vlsc) and I downloaded the preview from
http://preview.windows.com and the file I received is:
Windows8-RT-KB2849636-x64
The update installed, I received a notification to reboot, it configured updates, and when it came back up I logged in and voila...no Windows 8.1 :(
I'm curious if the reason this isn't working is because my version of Windows 8 Pro is a volume license edition.
