deleting cab files (windows xp home)
location:

I have a 10Gb HD that is almost full on an old laptop that is primarily used for surfing the net. I wanted to free up some space and was curious if I could delete the cab files for windows xp. I have the original XP disk if I have to do a restore or repair. Can I do this without causing problems?
Thanks,
HGman

Recycle bin appears to restore instead of deleting files
location:
microsoft.com - date:

I have a client running Windows XP Home. The problem is a file is deleted and goes to the recycle bin, he opens the bin and clicks on "Empty recycle bin" and it appears to delete the file, on reopening the folder that the deleted file was in, it has reappeared.
When I carried out some checks by deleting 6 files and emptying the bin, the message came up "Do you want to delete 26 items?" this happened when only the 6 files could be seen in the bin.

Can't restore Recycle Bin after deleting
location:
microsoft.com - date:
December 19, 2008
My recycle bin was deleted in error. I've tried to add it back through Personalization->Change Desktop Icon, but nothing happens when I select the Recycle Bin. In fact, none of the desktop system icons get added. I can see all of my program/shortcut
icons so I know these are not hidden. Unfortunately, this happened with the only administrator account while moving pictures between user folders.
Is there any more advanced way to replace the Recycle Bin?
Thanks.

Deleting files
location:

I read the following online recently.
<<browse to all users’ temporary files. These are typically found within the C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp directory within Windows XP or the C:\Users\Username\App Data\Local\Temp folder within Windows Vista.
Delete everything within the temporary folders. Many threats hide there seeking to regenerate upon system startup. >>
When it says delete everything within the temporary folders, does that mean the .tmp files or all the files irrespective of extension and all the subfolders as well?

Cannot re-install default windows fonts from CD.
location:

The other day I tried installing a font package which contained 65,000 fonts. After installing 20,000+ fonts, my system started running very slow. After doing some research, I discovered that I had too many fonts installed for my system to function properly.
Not knowing which fonts I needed, and which ones I did not need, I tried uninstalling all of them. This caused even more instability in my system than when I intalled the fints in the first place.
I went to the Microsoft website and discovered that I could re-install the fonts by using my Windows XP Professional CD. When I tried to do this, I recieved an error that told me my version of Windows was newer than the version on the CD. I just installed

Disable smoothing for bold fonts
location:

Hi,
Only bold text is using ClearType, how to disable ClearType for bold fonts? In Windows options ClearType is deselected and via regedit I have these settings:
FontSmoothing: 2 (to make it show smooth fonts for web fonts/font-faces, but at the same time use sharp fonts for default fonts)
FontSmoothingType: 1 (to disable ClearType and show sharp fonts in the Windows interface)
This is what I mean:
I am a web designer and browser has to show fonts in its original state and all this cleartype nonsense is driving me nuts. Who in the world would need all that crap, that cleartype thing is ruining everything, especially when you have to work with small fonts like 8px size it is totally blurred out. So as you can see I pretty much m
